Chili Chowder Challenge

History

Chilli-Chowder-Challenge-081

Now the biggest, longest lasting, and most often imitated chili and chowder cookoff in Maine (and we think the best), The Chili Chowder Challenge dates back to 2002, when a group of community supporters of the Children's Center got together to host something fun for kids and families to raise money for the Center's programs.

The first event was called the Children's Center Chili Chowder Challenge and Cha Cha Cha, but that many "Cs" got overwhelming! The first year it was held, it was a small event, held at the Buker Center in Augusta. That year it raised a modest $2,000, but it set in motion a 10-year history of ever-increasing size and revenue.

The chairperson of the committee for the first two years was Sharon Pray. We are thankful for her vision and the initiative to begin this event! Judy Griffin stepped up to the plate in 2004, and has chaired the committee ever since. Her leadership is essential to the success of the event (and it doesn't hurt that she knows everyone in central Maine, it seems!)

The spots for competing restaurants are highly valued, and the awards hold great importance for them...everyone wants to upset the Red Barn for the title of "Best Chowder" that they have won for five years running! The event would not be possible without the support of the great business community in Augusta, that both sponsors the event and contributes the items in the live and silent auctions (last year's auctions featured over 200 donated items). We are fortunate to be in a community that places children in a position of high importance.

Currently, the Chili Chowder Challenge draws over 1,000 people to the Augusta Armory on Western Avenue each March. You have to get there early, because the parking lot fills up fast! In 2009, we raised over $27,000 for the Center, which enable us to add on an extension to the building, which was dedicated to Judy Griffin for her tireless efforts and commitment to children.

In 2010, we raised over $30,000; the community supported early intervention programs to the tune of $35,000 in 2011. And in 2012, the Chili Chowder Challenge raised over $37,000 to help the Children's Center acquire adaptive technologies for classrooms and therapies.  11 great years and counting...Come and join the fun!
